Abaco Shelter: Help Us Build a Safe and Permanent Home for Abacos Dogs

All proceeds from this auction directly support The Abaco Shelters New Building Fundraiser Campaign, an urgent effort to relocate our entire operation to a safe, permanent, purpose-built facility on our newly acquired 5-acre property.

For years, The Abaco Shelter has been the frontline of rescue on Great Abaco Island in The Bahamas: saving stray and abandoned dogs, providing free community clinics, spay/neuter services, and support for local dog owners throughout the Abacos. But our current shelter sits on an abandoned dump site in Marsh Harbour where fires break out regularly, the area is unsecured, and improvements have always been limited because the land was never ours.

That changes now.
After years of petitioning, we have finally secured ownership of a safe, non-flood-zone property where we can build a permanent home for the dogs of Abaco. This auction helps fund that dream.

Why We Must Build Now

Our current setup is stretched beyond capacity. We care for 59 dogs in just 26 pens, with water hauled by bucket, food stored in an old reefer to keep rats out, and only two small quarantine rooms. Visiting vets perform miracles using folding tables and the supplies they carry in. Despite this, our team continues to rescue, rehabilitate, and run free spay/neuter clinics for the community.

A modern shelter will allow us to:
Expand from 26 pens to an initial 50, with a long-term goal of 100
Provide proper quarantine, medical, storage, and volunteer facilities
Create open runs for exercise, play, and socialization
Host vet teams safely and effectively
Offer sustainable, long-term rescue operations for the entire island

The remaining balance on our new perimeter fence
Concrete work along the bottom to prevent dig-outs
Sand fill for leveling and safe kennel expansion
Shade sails to protect dogs and volunteers from the heat
