Kiwanis Doernbecher Children's Cancer Program

Is it fair that any child gets cancer? At Kiwanis Doernbecher Children's Cancer Program (KDCCP) we don't think it is. That is why we raise money for the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Fellowship Program at OHSU Doernbecher Children's Hospital. We think a donation to KDCCP has a greater impact on children's cancer than any other cancer or hospital donation. Why? First, because KDCCP is an all volunteer organization with very low overhead, so, more of every dollar goes directly to the Fellows training. Second, leaps in child cancer survival rates have occurred due to research and better participation in clinical trials. Our Fellows are trained to treat patients, do research and conduct clinical trials. So they are the leading edge of child cancer survival. Third, our Fellows not only treat patients, conduct clinical trials and do leading edge research, they train other doctors. So, an investment in Fellows grows exponentially throughout their careers. That is Impact! You may share our feeling that no child should suffer from cancer. The question is, what are you going to do about it? One thing you can do is support Kiwanis Doernbecher Children's Cancer Program Online Auction. Make your bid count!

Why Doernbecher?

Doernbecher Childrens Hospital is the pediatric arm of Oregon Health and Sciences University (OHSU). OHSU is constantly testing the newest potential cancer therapies as one of only 21 National Cancer Institute pediatric phase 1 trials through the Childrens Oncology Group and other consortiums. This means that the children of Oregon and southwest Washington have access to the newest pediatric cancer treatments before they are more widely available. It also means that the Doernbecher Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Fellows get to participate in OHSU cancer labs during their research training. Doernbecher Childrens Hospital cares for the vast majority of Oregons young cancer patients and is the only provider of bone marrow and stem cell transplants in Oregon and southwest Washington. Without Doernbecher, children would have to go to Seattle or San Francisco for comparable care. It is the premier childrens hospital in Oregon and southwest Washington, providing the widest range of healthcare services for children in the region. More than 250,000 times last year, children from all over Oregon and Southwest Washington were treated at OHSU Doernbecher Childrens Hospital, because they could not get the highest level of treatment they needed anywhere else.
